A magnificent singer and dancer, Totó La Momposina has earned respect and admiration all over the world for the power and spontaneity of her performance. Drawing on the music and dance of the Colombian Caribbean, her work is informed and inspired by a rich cultural mix that combines elements from African, Native Indian and Spanish traditions.
Charismatic and popular in the scenario of so-called world music, it is for a Colombian cumbia the same as Celia Cruz (1925-2003) represented for a Cuban salsa or that Cesária Évora (1941-2011) meant for Cape Verdean mornas.
Now 77 Totó continues to work passionately to promote the music of her homeland. She has received many awards, notably the WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in 2016.
Totó la Momposina returns to international touring in 2017 with a new show featuring
music, voice and dance. An uplifting and soulful experience from a towering artist.
“She’s got the magic and she knows how to use it, percolating her percussion-centered ensemble into a froth that thickens time into an eternal ecstatic present”
“A small human thunderstorm … with galvanising voice.”
“A majestic, powerful and versatile singer.”
