Something is stirring in downtown Tucson!

Smashing together traditional Mexican regional styles like cumbia, mambo, and mariachi with a keen indie rock sensibility and an electronic edge, Orkesta Mendoza is a band of undeniable vibrancy. Their music is raucous and vigorous, but with the focus and dedication of a band of truly exceptional musicians. Led by multi-instrumentalist Sergio Mendoza, Orkesta Mendoza’s music evokes the idiosyncratic cultural and musical blend of the Mexican-American border, while paying homage in rhythm and mood to the ’60s rock Mendoza grew up listening to.

Sergio Mendoza's was born in Sonora, Mexico and landed in Tucson in his teens. He formed Orkesta Mendoza in 2009 out of a one-off tribute project to the Cuban mambo king Perez Prado, which proved too much fun to stop. It's become a fast-paced “indie-mambo” big-band, sometimes extended to 19 pieces, centred around Mendoza's guitar, keyboards and energetic animation and the elegant figure and powerful baritone voice of singer Salvador Duran, dancing out rhythms atop his wooden stomp-box as the spirits of Perez Prado and Agustín Lara float in on clouds of lap-steel guitar, blown by clattering timbales, bursts of Mariachi horns and a rumbling rhythm section.

Described by Joey Burns, of Calexico, as “epic and soulful,” Orkesta Mendoza latest album, “Vamos A Guarachar!” was edited by Glitterbeat, which recently won, for the third year in a row, the WOMEX award for best world music publisher.

Focused, fierce and beautifully performed by a group of superb musicians, "Vamos a Guarachar!" Is an album that totally blends with the explosive live performances of the band.

PRESS

“Great fun throughout … a musically defiant riposte to the virulent separatism of Donald Trump.”

The Independent

“Sergio Mendoza is probably my favourite musician of this time. He has the cumbia and mambo in his DNA, but  he has the power to make it sound like today. His Orkesta is as punk as the Sex Pistols and as violent as Perez Prado”

Camilo Lara, Mexican Institute of Sound

“Orkesta Mendoza is one of the best live bands out there. Their music delves into a myriad of directions, rhythms and moods, big band orchestrations mixed with lo fi electronica, vocals en Español together with moving instrumentals.”Vamos a Guarachar” is epic and soulful, it captures that positive spirit of the Southwest”
