Conhecido como The Rebel General, Jupiter lidera um grupo de músicos oriundos de onze diferentes províncias do Congo e carrega veementemente a bandeira do Bofenia Rock, do qual é o fundamental precursor, e que recupera ritmos e melodias do grande e esquecido Congo, misturando-os com o groove urbano, numa mistura energética e contagiante.
Jupiter cresceu na Alemanha onde ouviu o melhor da alma musical americana: James Brown, The Jackson 5, The Temptations e Kool and the Gang. Mais tarde, de volta ao Congo, descobriu o estilo congolês ultra-dominante da rumba, mas também uma infinidade de outros ritmos e estilos que vegetam nas sombras da rumba, todos estranhamente reminiscentes de funk, soul e Rock.
Com apenas 18 anos decide dedicar-se inteiramente à música contra a vontade dos seus pais. Foi por isso obrigado a sair de casa tendo vivido na rua, em casas abandonadas, ganhando algum dinheiro a tocar em funerais. Foi assim que ele ganhou o status de rebelde de primeiro grau, assim como seu apelido "Jupiter", que ficou com ele desde então. Foi nessa época, no início dos anos 80, que ele se juntou à banda Famous Black, que mais tarde se tornou Bongo Folk antes de finalmente se estabelecer no nome Okwess.
Em 2007, um documentário chamado “Jupiter’s Dance”, dirigido por Florent de la Tullaye e Renaud Barret revelou esta personalidade extraordinária para o mundo. Um pássaro esguio, vestido com um uniforme de general, uma espécie Don Quixote do gueto, que num dilapidado ambiente abandonado, lutou teimosamente contra as probabilidades de manter a sua banda viva, usando todas as artes da tenacidade e da perseverança.
Em 2013, o lançamento do álbum Hotel 'Univers' deu a Jupiter o reconhecimento internacional.
Kin Sonic, lançado em 2017, É um reflexo da sua própria experiências de vida, dos seus pensamentos e reflexões, e da sua própria singularidade. Mas reflecte também a sua universalidade, aumentada por o violino de Warren Ellis e os teclados de Damon Albarn.
Produzido por Marc-Antoine Moreau (Amadou e Mariam, Songhoy Blues) e François Gouverneur, Kin Sonic encontra a sua voz na exploração de um patrimônio que permaneceu totalmente oculto até agora, e vem tomar o seu lugar numa paisagem contemporânea, onde as paredes e as fronteiras se desvanecem face ao desejo dos homens de compartilhar momentos de beleza e pura loucura, tudo misturado.

Jupiter Bonkodji and his band Okwess International, collectively known as Jupiter Okwess, are the unparalleled leaders amongst the not-so-quietly vibrant musicians of the Democratic Republic of Congo. ‘The Dance of Jupiter,’ a film documenting Jupiter’s musical exploration was released in 2007 and he found himself raised to international recognition. On screen, we see his slender silhoutte exploring the various districts of Kinhasa, discovering artists unknown to the rest of the world.

Of course, Jupiter wasn’t about to disappear; he is poised for a fantastic career. In October 2011, he played Kinhasa to an audience of five thousand; in July of the same year, he was part of the the album created by Damon Albarn, of Blur and Gorillaz fame, ‘Kinhasa One Two,’ released in November 2011 through WARP.
Now he’s back with Kin Sonic, 4 years after the release of the exuberant Hotel Univers. Powered by Okwess International’s dazzling boosts and controlled crescendos, with a little help from Damon Albarn and Warren Ellis (of Nick Cave fame), Jupiter explores the immense wealth of traditional Congolese rhythms through which he filters the electrifying stridency of the rock inherited from his European past.
