Natural do Gana, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley é reconhecido como um génio da música Africana e sempre se apresentou ao mundo como crítico à corrupção, desigualdade e ao neo-colonialismo, com uma mentalidade pan-Africana.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, conhecido em Gana como o Simigwahene ("O Rei de Simigwa-Highlife"), é por vezes também apelidado de "James Brown de Gana". E não é por acaso! No panorama musical, explodiu na década de 70 com o “Simigwa-Do”: um tema musical que funde o afrobeat com o funk e o jazz. A partir da década de 80, instrumentos electrónicos ganharam um maior peso nas suas experiências musicais. O resultado foi uma mistura impressionante do Highlife e do Funk com sons vanguardistas provenientes dos sintetizadores e das vozes conscientes. A nova música de um inquieto génio empurrou os limites do Highlife para uma nova era.
Começou a sua carreira musical nos anos sessenta na Uhuru Dance Band, e aprendeu música com artistas proeminentes como Ebo Taylor, com quem ele fundou The Apagya Show Band em 1974. Agora, depois de mais de 40 anos e 30 álbuns, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley é também ele uma lenda viva. ‘SIMIGWA’ foi um dos álbuns mais inovadores do músico ganês, lançado pela editora Essiebons (1978). A Analog Africa lançou em 2018 um vinil de 12” de Gyedu-Blay Ambolley contendo quatro faixas da Afrofunk de Gyedu-Blay Ambolley,
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley recebeu, ao longo da sua carreira, vários prémios de prestígio, como por exemplo o “Lifetime Achievement” no Ghana Music Awards, em 2013; o “Lifetime Achievement” pela Universidade de Medicina Charles R. Drew e Ciência na Califórnia e, ainda, um prémio pelo Estado da Califórnia por colmatar a lacuna entre África e a música Afro-americana.
Esteve pela primeira vez em Portugal no início de 2019 com a sua SEKONDI BAND para um concerto arrebatador que ficou gravado na memória de todos como um concerto histórico, um momento único, de uma energia contagiante e de puro amor pela sua arte.
Em Novembro de 2019 Gyedu-Blay Ambolley lançou o seu mais recente disco, "11th Street, Sekondi" pela Agogo Records.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, known in Ghana as the Simigwahene ("The King of Simigwa-Highlife"), is sometimes also referred to as the “James Brown of Ghana.” And not without reason. With his deep and groovy Afrofunk sound, that he called Simigwa-do, he exploded on the Ghanaian music scene in 1973. His concoction of Highlife, Funk, Jazz, Soul and proto-rap was and still is exhilarating.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley started in the sixties in the Uhuru Dance Band, and learned music from outstanding artists like Ebo Taylor, with whom he founded The Apagya Show Band in 1974. Now, after more than 40 years and 30 albums, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is a living legend, too. He figures on numerous trendy re-issues, from obscure ones like Afrodisiac to hip ones like Soundway and Analog Africa. Analog Africa recently released a 12” vinyl of Ambolley's August 2018 containing four Afrofunk tracks by Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, including his highly Afrospiritual track "The Message."
Long awaited, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is now touring Europe for the first time with his own, very powerful group: the Sekondi Band. They’ve been playing together for over seven years. In November 2019 he released on Agogo Records a brand new album, released entitled '11th Street, Sekondi'. On the album, named after the area of West Ghana where he grew up, Ambolley looks back at the area and musical styles that shaped his life.
